Brian Malone

I am a teacher and a writer, living in Santa Cruz, California. I received my Ph.D. in Literature from UC Santa Cruz in August 2014, where I then taught for two years as a Lecturer for Porter and Stevenson Colleges, as well as in the Writing Program.

My interests include urban geography, musical theater, social movements, queer theory, ethics, and disaster.

I am a full-time faculty member in English at De Anza College in Cupertino, where I have been teaching since Spring 2015. My course topics so far have focused on Harry Potter, Broadway musicals, cities, immigration, cultural identity, and race. I am particularly interested in working with students to understand segregation and gentrification in contemporary Silicon Valley. I have taught in a number of learning communities. Currently, I am working with the CREM community, which links together English, Math, and Speech--encouraging students to make connections between multiple academic subjects.

My office hours and contact information are available on my De Anza faculty homepage. Current students should access course information on Canvas, where I’ve posted necessary course materials.
